Just an hour's drive from York, across the beautiful North York Moors, Whitby is one of North Yorkshire's most picturesque seaside towns.
It is famous for its ruined Abbey and its connections with Bram Stoker's Dracula.
This impressive view of Whitby Harbour was M.J. Braithwaite's first venture into the medium of watercolour.
The painting shows the view from the sea end of the harbour wall looking back towards the town - an unusual view not often approached by artists due to its difficult perspective - most artists have preferred to paint the view looking seaward from the town. The onlooker's eye is drawn along the boardwalk to the central lighthouse, the focal point, giving a feeling of depth to the picture.The original painting was done in watercolour on paper, in 2000.
