Abdul Malik Nobel is a Bangladeshi-born, York-based watercolour artist whose plein-air practice focuses on light, atmosphere, and the emotional essence of place.
En plein air - French for 'in the open air' - is a style popularised by the Impressionist artists of the 19th century, where the artist paints outdoors, directly on site, capturing the atmosphere and natural light of a location in real time using loose brushstrokes.

About This Painting
This atmospheric watercolour captures one of York's most iconic views - the magnificent West Towers of York Minster rising majestically along Duncombe Place. Painted on a rainy day, the scene is rendered in beautiful misty tones that evoke the ethereal quality of the Minster emerging through the weather. The tower of St Wilfrid's Catholic Church punctuates the left side of the composition, adding architectural depth to this quintessentially York vista.
Abdul has masterfully captured the interplay of rain, mist, and stone, creating a moody and evocative portrait of the cathedral that celebrates both its grandeur and the atmospheric conditions that give York its distinctive character. The wet streets and soft light create a sense of quiet contemplation, inviting the viewer to experience the Minster as locals do - in all weathers, in all its glory.
