Description
'Sweet Mustard Nothings' - a 2004 Sam Toft original.
We are delighted to be able to share this fabulous 2004 Sam Toft original with you. Sam's originals are rarely offered for sale, so when we were asked by the current owner to sell the painting, we jumped at the chance!
The original was purchased back in 2004 directly from Sam herself. The artwork is in its original frame - a flat dark oak colour, chosen by Sam.
The frame is rather distressed and the mount has aged however as Sam has selected the presentation and titled the artwork on the mount in pencil, we have not replaced the mount or frame.
We took the artwork out of the frame to get a closer look and were thrilled to find a little pencil working sketch on the reverse, dated August 2004, which hasn't been seen for 20 years. How exciting! We showed Sam who said 'Awwwww!' - happy memories eh?
We asked Sam herself to value the artwork; she tells us that her current work in this size sells for £2450 in 2024, so here's a rare chance to treat yourself for a little bit less!
The image size is approximately 300x400mm, with mount size 400x500mm and outer frame dimensions of 520x620mm.
If you're interested, or would like to make an offer, please contact Anne at the gallery on 01904 655707. Better still, come and take a look in person - the gallery is open in York city centre seven days a week. We like to think we are northern home of all things Tofty, and Sam’s biggest fans!
Please note, we will NOT ship the artwork in its frame. Obviously we can insure against glass breakage but we can't replace precious originals. If you would like the picture in this frame, please collect from the gallery. If ordered online, for safety, we will remove the picture from its frame prior to shipping and ship the mounted artwork only.
Sam’s characters, ‘The Mustards’ have a legion of loyal fans. She has described herself as their Official Picture Maker and Story Teller for the past 20 years. They are her imaginary friends, helping her make sense of a world that sometimes seems stranger than fiction; never more so than current times.
Ernest and his dear lady wife Violet live in a not-so damp basement flat on the Brighton Hove border, with Doris, their grumpy and rather portly Jack Russell Terrier, and an ever increasing menagerie of eccentric pets. They inhabit a seaside world of faded ice cream colours where the breeze is always blowing and life is utterly delicious.
We can only ship framed items within the UK.
As with all secondary market work, the print and frame are not new, and are therefore ‘sold as seen.’ We have endeavoured to describe to condition as accurately as possible.
You will be interested to hear that when we sell original paintings on the secondary market, a percentage of the sale goes back to the artist, via the Artist's Resale Right Scheme, handled by the Design & Copyright Society. It seems fitting that Sam should continue to benefit from the sale of her beautiful work.
