Last year's calendar was an exclusive available only from Sam and us here at The Braithwaite Gallery — and we simply couldn't keep up with demand. About Sam Toft
Sam Toft lives by the sea in a tall thin house called Toftie Towers, with Birdy dog and a pond full of fish named after the Shipping Forecast. Her best known characters, the Mustards, live in a not-so-damp basement flat on the Brighton Hove border: Ernest Hemmingway Mustard, Violet, the dear lady wife, and Doris Jane, their grumpy, rather portly Jack Russel terrier. Violet is a martyr to her bunions and spends a lot of her time at home with Rover the fish and a big fat cushion of a cat for company. Reading recipe books and perfecting her marshmallow cocoa, she daydreams of a slightly damp Mr Darcy. Ernest is a professional tuneless hummer and part time hurricane predictor who loves discovering new friends and adventures with his constant, if reluctant, companion. Doris dog's interests lie mainly in custard, roast dinners and cake.
No calendar would be complete without some wise words from Sam:
"Like an unruly garden, my imaginary world has grown in all sorts of directions, and after all these years I'm still finding surprises in the undergrowth. The central themes remain the same: friendship, joy, hope, loss and a fair bit of silliness along the way. There are always bad things going on in the world and I'd like to offer a little cheer and comfort if I can. Smiles are infectious and an optimistic frame of mind encourages kindness, good humour, and positive strength. Perhaps together we'll make a difference after all? One thing's for certain, we have a whole new year of opportunity ahead of us. Here we go again!"
"In these uncertain times I hope there's some solace to be found in an imaginary world with its faded ice cream colours. A world where the breeze is always blowing, friendships come easily and there's always time for second chances. And here, in case of emergencies, our dear Mr Mustard will always be carrying a few spare mint humbugs in his pocket. Because it's always nice to find the joy of sweetness when you'd quite forgotten It was there, isn't it?"
