Fundraising result — Spring 2025: The winner of Anthony Marn's Micklegate Bar painting, chosen on 21st April 2025, was Margaret from Scotland. The raffle raised £596 for PAPYRUS. This fundraiser is now closed. No further entries or donations are available through this listing.
Thank you to everyone involved.
When artist Anthony Marn found out about our PAPYRUS fundraiser, he was keen to get involved. He was hugely generous and sent the gallery an original oil-on-board painting of York's Micklegate Bar.
We raffled this painting for our Spring 2025 charity fundraiser, in aid of PAPYRUS, a charity focused on the prevention of young suicide, in memory of Jake, son of gallery owners Anne and Mark, who was lost to suicide aged just 20.
Gallery Director Anne spoke to Bek Homer on BBC Radio York's Daytime Show about the fundraiser on 17th January. Radio York and the local media were great supporters of our fundraising efforts.
The winning ticket was selected at random on Easter Monday 2025. Congratulations to Margaret in Scotland.
Anthony lost both parents to suicide whilst still a young child. He tells us that no one talked about it at the time, which only made the situation more difficult to deal with. Growing up, he became a police officer and often dealt with others struggling with mental health. His work has explored the grieving process and the trouble he had coming to terms with his own loss, in an exhibition titled The Space Left Behind.
Both Anthony and ourselves at The Braithwaite Gallery were proud to show our support for PAPYRUS and the work it did for young people in need.
Micklegate Bar is an original oil-on-board painting with an image size of approximately 40.6 × 30.5cm. It is framed as shown in a wide distressed black frame with a soft scoop cream inner slip; outer frame dimensions are approximately 53.3 × 43.2cm.
PAPYRUS was dedicated to the prevention of suicide in young people. Its fundraising pages are no longer publicly visible, so we are preserving this listing as part of the gallery's fundraising history.
Final fundraiser amount: £596. Previous fundraisers for mental health charity Mind raised £5,825. Huge thanks to everyone involved.
The Braithwaite Gallery organised this fundraiser in its own capacity. The original event was organised by The Braithwaite Gallery Ltd as a Small Society Lottery, registered with City of York Council, registration number CYC-071646.
Special thanks as always to the lovely ladies at City of York Council's Licensing Unit for helping process the registration and paperwork.
Final PAPYRUS JustGiving record: Our PAPYRUS fundraising projects raised a final total of £18,984, which was donated via JustGiving. PAPYRUS entered administration in September 2026, and its fundraising pages are no longer publicly visible. We were deeply disappointed because PAPYRUS provided a vital resource for young people at risk of suicide. This screenshot preserves the final total and the history of the fundraisers that made it possible.
