Abdul Malik Nobel is a Bangladeshi-born, York-based watercolour artist whose plein-air practice focuses on light, atmosphere, and the emotional essence of place.
En plein air - French for 'in the open air' - is a style popularised by the Impressionist artists of the 19th century, where the artist paints outdoors, directly on site, capturing the atmosphere and natural light of a location in real time using loose brushstrokes.

About This Painting
This tranquil watercolour captures the ornamental pond at Rowntree Park, with birds swimming peacefully across its surface. The park holds special significance as York's first municipal park, gifted to the people of York by philanthropist Joseph Rowntree (1836-1925), owner of the renowned chocolate manufacturers Rowntree & Co. Also known as Rowntree Memorial Park, it was dedicated to the memory of 200 workers from the Rowntree factory who died or suffered during the Great War, with a memorial erected in their honour in 1921.
Abdul has beautifully rendered the park's serene atmosphere, showcasing the shallow curving lake that is spanned by a lych-gate and dovecote.
