What The Dickens (Square Detail) – Simon Clarke
Fluffy sheep peer from the crooked buildings of a wonderfully Dickensian street, where Scrooge & Marley’s purple shopfront sits beside Bleak House and Fagin’s second-hand goods. A scruffy little dog waits on the pavement, while the teal edge of The Old Curiosity Shop and a cart labelled Great Eggspectations add to Simon Clarke’s playful literary world.
These colourful, characterful streets remind us of old York, making Simon’s work feel wonderfully at home in our gallery in the heart of the historic city. This square detail brings the heart of the scene into a smaller space, with plenty of literary mischief to discover. How many Charles Dickens references can you spot?
