The Pumpkin Queen – Lord Monteagle

Every pumpkin patch deserves a queen. Wearing a little golden crown, this pearly ghost presides over her gathering of bright orange pumpkins, their curling green stalks bringing a playful splash of colour to her miniature autumn kingdom. With her softly folded cloak and two watchful dark eyes, she is more charming than chilling, a little Halloween presence with a character all her own.

A battery-operated tealight candle sits inside the ghostly figure, bringing a gentle glow to her royal haunt as the evenings draw in. The pumpkins are attached to the base board, while the Queen herself is moveable, ready to survey her kingdom from a different spot.

Inspired by Mark Braithwaite’s Beneath the Sheets series of ghostly pictures, gallery staff member Ian has created Ghosts in the Gallery. Each ghostly figurine is individually crafted from air-drying clay and hand painted with pearlised paint. Each is unique, with its own personality.

The story behind Lord Monteagle

When Mark painted his Guy Fawkes-themed Treason and Plot picture, we were fascinated to find that the plot was foiled by a letter written to Lord Monteagle, which also happens to be Ian’s surname. Mark created a special Enchanted picture for Ian with the words Lord Monteagle illuminated across the gunpowder keg, and this seemed the obvious name for Ian’s ghostly creative endeavour.
