She sits beside an open fire, a glass of burgundy raised gently in her hand — the wine and the dress a perfect, unplanned match. The flames glow warm behind her through the ornate fireplace grate. It's an evening of quiet pleasure, unhurried and entirely her own.
The firelight does what candlelight does in Mark's other works, but with greater drama — deep ambers and burnt oranges blazing across the composition, the shadows rich and chestnut-dark in the Old Masters tradition. The deep red of her dress and the burgundy in her glass become part of the same warm, saturated palette.
