The Salon – Dotty Earl
From Dotty Earl's Tall Stories series — where the figures are always gloriously oversized. Two orange hood dryers. Two salon chairs. Under one, a tall figure in a pink floral gown sits reading a magazine, legs crossed, entirely at ease. Under the other sits a large fluffy poodle. Also in a salon chair. Also under a hood dryer. The poodle looks mildly resigned to the whole arrangement.
Teal walls, black and white chequerboard floor, wig stands, shelves of products, round mirrors, a stack of magazines. A nostalgic, warmly funny scene that captures the particular atmosphere of the old-fashioned hair salon perfectly — and raises the obvious question of who booked the second appointment.
Dotty works in mixed media — watercolour with pastel and coloured pencil, with a smidge of charcoal and ink pen thrown in — giving her work a soft, whimsical quality that is entirely her own. She calls it The Twirly World of Dotty Earl.

About Dotty Earl
Dotty was born and grew up on the Wirral, and was drawn to art from a young age — going on to study at Wirral Metropolitan College before earning a degree in Film and Animation at the University of Humberside. She spent many years as a digital artist and animator in the computer games industry, illustrating novels and designing artwork for clothing lines along the way.
Dotty now lives in a small Yorkshire village, where her love of painting bright, colourful characters — created to make people smile — continues to grow.
