Fundraising result — Summer 2025: The winner of The Happy Neighbours, chosen on 31st August 2025, was Andrew from Wales. The raffle raised £1,542 for PAPYRUS. This page remains live as a record of the fundraiser; no further entries or donations are available through it.

Perched proudly atop a tiny hill sit two cheerful houses, home to two sets of the dearest friends. Every summer evening, they gather beneath their shared giant tree, picnicking, gossiping, and soaking up the charm of their cosy little hamlet. As dusk settles, the laughter fades and the friends retreat indoors, where they're soon snoring softly in their beds, wrapped in the quiet comfort of a life well-loved.
Artist Gary Walton, a good friend of the gallery, has been a huge supporter of our fundraising efforts in aid of PAPYRUS and generously donated this stunning original artwork.
The Happy Neighbours is a Gary Walton mixed media original. It is presented mounted, with approximate outer dimensions of 51 × 35cm and image dimensions of 30 × 15cm.
We raffled this painting for our Summer 2025 charity fundraiser in aid of PAPYRUS, a charity focused on the prevention of young suicide, in memory of Jake, son of gallery owners Anne and Mark, who was lost to suicide aged just 20.
The winning ticket was selected at random on 31st August 2025. A lovely end to the summer holidays for Andrew in Wales.
Gary also sent us some miniature originals for the wider charity fundraising project, including Pierfolk, The Camper's Calling, Moonlight Meeting, Saltwater Bay and Hilltop Haven.
Both Gary and ourselves at The Braithwaite Gallery were proud to show our support for PAPYRUS and the work it did for young people in need.
BBC Radio York and the local media have been great supporters of our fundraising efforts — Gallery Director Anne is regularly invited to speak on Bec Homer's morning show on BBC Radio York.
PAPYRUS was dedicated to the prevention of suicide in young people. Its fundraising pages are no longer publicly visible, so we are preserving this page as part of the gallery’s fundraising history.
Final fundraiser amount: £1,542. Previous fundraisers for mental health charity Mind raised £5,825. Huge thanks to everyone involved.

Final PAPYRUS JustGiving record: Our PAPYRUS fundraising projects raised a final total of £18,984, which was donated via JustGiving. PAPYRUS entered administration in September 2026, and its fundraising pages are no longer publicly visible. We were deeply disappointed because PAPYRUS provided a vital resource for young people at risk of suicide. This screenshot preserves the final total and the history of the fundraisers that made it possible.
