Silent Night, St William's College by Mark Braithwaite
from The Silent Night Collection
St William’s College lies to the east side of York Minster. It was dedicated to St William, the great-grandson of William the Conqueror, who was Archbishop in York in 1154. It is a mediaeval building which was originally erected to provide accommodation for priests attached to the Minster’s chantry chapels.
This beautiful view, looking along College Street on a snowy winter’s night, shows the distinctive black and white timber-framed building at its most atmospheric. Street lamps cast light and shadows onto the path where not a single footprint has disturbed the freshly-fallen snow.
