What a Shambles – Simon Clarke
York’s Shambles becomes a wonderfully woolly world of mischief, with fluffy sheep, drifting ghosts and a little dog among its leaning timbered buildings. Warm shop windows light the narrow cobbled street, while a Viking sheep and a pointed wizard’s hat bring playful surprises to this much-loved corner of York.
Simon and his wife Jo visited us at the gallery, then wandered around York with a camera to gather ideas for a York-themed painting. Simon tells us that many of the quirky additions came from Jo. Together they’ve woven in York’s ghosts, Vikings, Harry Potter and a nod to the city’s chocolate history. What else can you spot?
