Gert & Henry's, Shambles Market, York - an original pastel on A5 paper by York Artist Joe Gill
Joe has captured an atmospheric scene of the ancient timber framed building on Jubbergate in York, at the heart of what is now the Shambles Market. Currently home to Gert & Henry's restaurant, the building luckily survived the 1950s demolition of much of the surrounding area. The tower of mediaeval St Sampson's Church can be seen in the background.
The artwork is accompanied Certificate of Authenticity which has been hand signed by the artist.
About the artist: York born artist Joe Gill recently returned to the north after graduating from an Illustration degree at the University of Brighton.
Joe brought some of his prints and originals to show us, and we knew straight away that his work would be a great fit to the portfolio of artists here at The Braithwaite Gallery.
We loved his rich colour palette of soft pastels, reminiscent of the moody nocturnal urban landscapes of Victorian artist John Atkinson Grimshaw. Joe captures both the atmosphere of the location, full of history and personality, as well as a realistic landscape drawn with the skill of a draughtsman.
nb the paper has been hand trimmed by the artist so is not exactly A5
Pastel artwork is very fragile. The drawing has been fixed with Windsor & Newton Pastel Fixative, however care is required when handling to avoid smudging.
