Every street had one — the corner shop, the beating heart of the neighbourhood. Kids circle on their Chopper bikes outside while a couple of ladies put the world to rights, headscarves on, not a moment to waste. Meanwhile, a mum and child press their noses to the window, weighing up the goodies within. John Wood captures 1970s Northern street life at its most vivid and warmly human.
