"Chumping” ORIGINAL by Paul Heeley
ORIGINAL Oil On Stretched Canvas
by artist Paul Heeley
A atmospheric, nostalgic memory of life in a northern mill town.
I had to look this term up as (despite living in Yorkshire for decades!) I hadn’t heard it before. Apparently, in Yorkshire dialect, ‘Chumping’ is the act of gathering wood for bonfire night.
Little Jimmy gathers up anything he can find to add to his bonfire, in the cutting of the old railway line. A splash of colour against the brooding grey of the sky provided by Jimmy’s red coat.
