Welcome to the Braithwaite Gallery’s first ever blog

- exciting times ahead!
For those who don’t know us, we are an independent, family-run art gallery located in the historic city of York, just yards from the magnificent York Minster. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just dipping your toes into the world of home decor, our gallery is a treasure trove of art, where everyone is bound to find their new favourite!
So, I know you’re wondering, why start a blog now?
Well, after 25 years nestled in the heart of York, we decided it was time we started sharing more than just art. We wanted to share our stories, our journey, our love for what we do… with you: the community that makes it all possible.
Lets take a peek inside our little red shop
If you’ve ever walked down the cobbled pavements of Low Petergate, your eye may have been caught by the glow of a little ghostly figure perched within our windowsills. Or perhaps been captivated by the whimsical worlds created by Sam Toft. You may have even ventured beyond our red door and discovered our four floors filled with fantastic pieces.
But what you may not know is how these pieces got here - or the stories we’ve been told as customers fall in love with their ‘perfect match’ in a painting or a print. Over the years, our little shop has grown into a hub where artists and art lovers alike can share their inspirations, and connect our little corner of the world to the rest of it!

So, What’s next at Braithwaites?
With the world heading fast and faster into a digital age, we wanted to try our hand at creating the same feelings shared between us and our customers in store, online. We hope this blog will become a conversation, not just a monologue. With that, we’ll be sharing insights on how to choose art for your space, behind the scenes looks at how our shop runs, artists and team spotlights, and maybe even the occasional ghost story (York is the most haunted city in Europe, after all)
But most importantly, we want to hear from you!

What kind of art speaks to you?
How have you transformed your home into a space that feels yours?
Have you visited us? If so, we would love to see photos of your art that has found its forever home!
We’d love to hear your thoughts, so let’s make this space an online community where art and stories come alive. Make sure to leave a comment and follow us on social media for more blog posts like this one.
Ooh, and don’t forget to pop by and say hi if you’re in York!
Until next time,
Anne, Kate and the Braithwaite Gallery Team
