These gates were to be closed at night, purportedly for the \"prevention of nocturnal incursions of thieves\" from the Minster Close; legend, however, has it that they were equally to prevent the nocturnal excursions of the young clergy, to the temptingly close Grope (now Grape) Lane! \"Minster Gates\" was the entrance to the city from the cathedral. These walls have long ago been destroyed, but the name remains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"artist\" align=\"justify\"\u003eWhen the cathedral was struck by lightning in 1984, the South Transept was gutted in the ensuing fire. Two conical mounds were constructed, each surrounded by a moat and topped by a wooden watch tower. Although both mounds remain, only one still has a tower.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\" class=\"artist\"\u003eIn 1190, the wealthy Jews of York took refuge in the castle keep, seeking refuge from the wave of anti-Semitism which swept the country. Panic stricken inside the Tower, they were too terrified by the noise of the mob outside to open the gates to admit the Governor, and an assault on the Tower was ordered. Rather than fall into the hands of their enemies, the Jews in despair killed themselves and set fire to the tower.
