The Shambles
The Victorian York Collection
by MJ Braithwaite
This narrow street with its overhanging buildings must be one of the most picturesque streets in the world! Legend has it that hands can be shaken out of the first floor windows across the narrowest part of the street!
Originally the street of butchers, many shops still have their old meat hooks outside, although there has not been a butcher on the Shambles in decades!
The first ever painting from M.J. Braithwaite's York Collection, researched from archive photographs of York at the end of the 19th Century, it is one of a series of four pictures which make up "The Victorian York Collection".
Interestingly, M.J. Braithwaite's "The Shambles" print from "The Classic York Collection" of pictures is painted from the same location, but done from life 100 years later, in 1998.
The original picture was painted in acrylic, on canvas in 1995. Look for Lucy, M.J. Braithwaite's black cat trademark! |
