Lop Lane
The Victorian York Collection

One of the initial paintings from M.J. Braithwaite's York Collection, researched from archive photographs of York in the reign of Queen Victoria, it is one of a series of four pictures which make up "The Victorian York Collection".
Lop Lane led from Lendal Bridge and Museum Street to the West Front of the Minster. The buildings on the right of Lop Lane were cleared in the 19th century by Archbishop Duncombe, who wished to create a more impressive approach to the cathedral. The new tree lined avenue was renamed Duncombe Place.
