The Shambles
by MJ Braithwaite
The Shambles is one of the best preserved medieval street in the world; this narrow street with its overhanging buildings has to be the most picturesque streets in the city of York! You can shake hands with your neighbour from the uppermost windows across the narrowest part of the street!
Originally the street of butchers, many shops still have their old meat hooks outside, although there hasn't been a butcher on the Shambles in decades! The Shambles was home to St. Margaret Clitheroe, York's Christian martyr. Her home is now a Shrine, open to the public.
The original picture was worked in aquarelle pastel on paper in 1994.
