The Minster Fire: 20th Anniversary Edition

The Braithwaite Gallery is pleased to introduce ‘The Fire from Minster Gates’, a limited edition print created by artist M. J. Braithwaite to commemorate the 20 year anniversary of the fire that devastated York Minster on the 9th of July 1984.

Artist M. J. Braithwaite says that the Minster fire had been the most requested image not in his portfolio! Prompted by public demand the artist began to research the subject and was kindly provided with never before seen, original reference material by Petergate resident Peter Jones.

The painting, which of course features Lucy, M.J.Braithwaite’s trademark black cat, has been reproduced as a limited edition lithograph, canvas editions are also available.

"The Fire from Minster Gates - 20th Anniversary" has been reproduced as a Limited Edition of 1500 copies plus 10 Artist Signed Proofs, in the following formats:

Nos 1-150 Canvas Giclee; mounted in 50x50cm white core mount £75

Nos 151-500 Watercolour Paper Giclee; mounted in 50x50cm white core mount £50

Nos 501-1500 Lithograph; mounted in 40x40cm mount £20

A special edition canvas has been presented by the artist to Mr Jones to thank him for his assistance with the project. A further 50 limited edition prints have been donated to York Minster, where the proceeds will continue the ongoing preservation of our historic cathedral.

The painting itself was perhaps appropriately plagued by mishaps which threatened its completion - surviving the appalling weather conditions of 2004 which on one occasion blew the artist’s easel right through the unfinished canvas!
