Artist MJ Braithwaite: Along Petergate
Along Petergate
by MJ Braithwaite
In the city of York, testament to its Viking history, many of the streets are known as "Gates" (from the Danish word for street), and the stone gatehouses in the city walls are "Bars".
Low Petergate derives its name from the Minster, which is dedicated to St. Peter. Situated in the heart of the ancient city of York, it was once the Via Principalis of the Roman city of Eboracum. |

The original was painted, in acrylic on canvas, in 2001. Many of the figures are based on real people - local shopkeepers and buskers who can be seen regularly on this street. The soldier at the front is a friend from 2 Signal Regiment who also features in the Leeman Road picture; his wife worked at the time on Low Petergate.
Look for Lucy, M.J. Braithwaite's black cat trademark, who is hiding in this picture!
"Along Petergate" is available as a Limited Edition, approximate A3 paper size. Restricted to 2000 editions, each print has been hand signed and numbered in ink by artist MJ Braithwaite.
